Calling on States to act to end the trade in torture tools

13 Mar 2026

All around the world, specialist equipment is used in acts of torture & other ill-treatment. Despite this, there are no international, human rights-based controls on the trade in tools of torture.

Last week, the Torture-Free Trade Network conducted an advocacy mission during the Human Rights Council. We met with States, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Edwards, & came together as a civil society Network calling for a Torture-Free Trade Treaty.

We commend Mongolia for the statement delivered on behalf of the 60+ states of the Alliance for Torture-Free Trade – the group of states committed to ending the trade in torture tools.

The statement is a sign from Alliance Member States of their commitment to ending the torture trade and part of their torture prevention obligations. Civil society is ready to support States in the development of a legally-binding Torture-Free Trade Treaty.
