Supporting Torture-Free Trade & strengthening the anti-torture movement

29 May 2025

Under the United Against Torture Consortium, Omega was pleased to be able to provide small grants to seven civil society organisations to help further their work to sustain and develop support for national, regional, and international measures to address the trade in law enforcement equipment used for torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and punishment.

The projects supported developed and implemented a diverse range of research, campaigning, high-level advocacy, and media activities.

Through this round of grants, we were able to support the work of:

  • African Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV), based in Uganda
  • African Policing Civilian Oversight Forum (APCOF), based in South Africa
  • Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS), based in Argentina
  • Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), based in South Africa
  • Dejusticia, Center for the Study of Law, Justice and Society, based in Colombia
  • Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights, based in Egypt
  • Temblores Ong, based in Colombia

These projects have helped to expand and strengthen the campaign for a Torture-Free Trade Treaty. Projects built engagement within national and regional actors and institutions, including police forces and authorities, national and regional human rights mechanisms, and regional intergovernmental frameworks.

We are keen to continue to work with the organisations supported and to further develop these partnerships. It is thanks to our role in the United Against Torture Consortium that we have been able to support this important work.

Omega is a member of the United Against Torture Consortium together with the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT), the International Federation of Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture (FIACAT), the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT), and REDRESS.
