On 6 & 8 November 2024 Omega ran an online workshop on how to research and document the manufacture, export and use of South Korean policing equipment. The workshop was co-organised with World Without War in South Korea who are looking to increase their knowledge and expertise in this area to enable them to work more on these issues. Participants came from across the Asia region
Workshop participants were keen to learn more about the manufacture, trade, and use of policing weapons, as well as how to monitor and research these weapons. However, it was also an opportunity for Omega to learn more about the regulatory framework governing manufacture and use of policing weapons in South Korea.

South Korean companies manufacture a range of policing equipment including chemical irritants, kinetic impact projectiles, and restraints. These weapons and equipment are then exported around the world. Export data shows that South Korean companies such as Korea CNO Tech Ltd and Dae Kwang Chemical Corporation have exported policing equipment to counties ranging from Mexico to Mongolia.
We are looking forward to continuing to collaborate with World Without War and other researchers around the world. If your organisation would be interested in co-organising one of our workshops, please contact us.
