Promoción de la aplicación de las normas contra la tortura en México
El 26 de junio de 2024, Día Internacional en Apoyo de las Víctimas de la Tortura, Omega Research Foundation impartió una conferencia al Poder Judicial de la Ciudad de México sobre el Protocolo de Estambul.
Más de 200 miembros del poder judicial y su personal asistieron al evento, que abordó la tortura y otros tratos o penas crueles, inhumanos y degradantes en diversos contextos, incluidos los sitios de encierro, en las fronteras y durante las protestas. La conferencia corrió a cargo de Verónica Hinestroza, integrante de la Red de Expertos de Omega que también formó parte del Grupo de Trabajo responsable de la versión actualizada de 2022 del Protocolo de Estambul: Manual para la investigación y documentación eficaces de la tortura y otros tratos o penas crueles, inhumanos o degradantes.
Durante la inauguración del evento, el Magistrado Rafael Guerra Álvarez, Presidente del Tribunal Superior de Justicia de la Ciudad de México, destacó los continuos esfuerzos que realiza el Poder Judicial de la ciudad para erradicar cualquier situación que atente contra la dignidad humana, entre ellas la tortura.
Este evento subraya el compromiso continuo de Omega con los actores judiciales en México, con el objetivo de aumentar la capacidad para erradicar la tortura, incluso a través de una mejor aplicación del Protocolo de Estambul y otras herramientas y normas internacionales de derechos humanos. Es la continuación de amplios programas de formación impartidos por Omega y nuestra Red de Expertos a grupos numerosos de jueces federales, defensores públicos y fiscales en los últimos años.
Promoting the implementation of anti-torture standards in Mexico
On 26 June 2024, the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the Omega Research Foundation delivered a lecture to the Judiciary of Mexico City on the Istanbul Protocol.
Over 200 members of the judiciary and their staff attended the event, which addressed torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment in diverse contexts, including in places of detention, at borders and during protests. The lecture was delivered by Verónica Hinestroza, a member of Omega’s Network of Experts who also formed part of the Working Group responsible for the 2022 updated version of the Istanbul Protocol: Manual on the Effective Investigation and Documentation of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
During the inauguration of the event, Magistrate Rafael Guerra Álvarez, Presidente of the Judiciary of Mexico City, underlined the continuous efforts made by the city’s judiciary to eradicate any situation that violates human dignity, including torture.
This event underscores Omega’s continued engagement with judicial actors in Mexico, aimed at increasing capacity to eradicate torture, including through improved implementation of the Istanbul Protocol and other international human rights tools and standards. It follows extensive training programmes delivered by Omega and our Network of Experts to large cohorts of federal judges, public defenders and prosecutors over recent years.
